The vignette format has often been used in several mediums (literature, cinema), but we still haven’t seen it much in videogames. This talk will look at what happens if you make vignettes in the form of videogames. The resulting small, poetic games earn an aesthetic closer to the medium of painting that inevitably bypass traditional design elements, such as challenges, objectives or rewards yet have in return considerable space for interpretation and meaning. This talk will be a reviewed and improved version of my GDC 2017 talk on vignettes and painting.
